the envelope please...

*drum roll* the winner of the red dogfood bag tote is:

(i was totally amazed that barney did this! it as totally out of the blue. i saw on that one blog giveaway that a lady let her chicken pick, so i thought i'd see if he'd do it like the chicken. surprise of surprises- he did! normal 'round here is just a setting on the dryer!)

If I opened a shop with fabric and goodies it would be Shipyard Quilts because the building I'm in was the office for the ship-builders that were here until 1920.My quilting business is The Crafty Unicorn because unicorns have always been my good luck charm and "crafty" gives me more options than just quilts (but who needs more than quilts!)Love the bag by the way.

CONGRATS! leslie, if you'll email your snail address, i'll get the red dogfood bag tote in the mail.

so, all the quilty goodness you look forward to will return real soon. use the time to go and read all the back posts...i promise to do the give away on monday....

i'll miss blogging and the APQS forum....

published!

i'm in fonz and porter's love of quilting again. if you'll look on page 72 in the sept/oct 2009 issue- i quilted that quilt. it was pieced by jean ann wright and called "gotham medallion"

thanks to joan for the emailed congrats....

that's more like it....

i don't wanna beat a dead horse here....maybe just slap it around a bit....but i just thought you'd like to see what
a watermelon is suppose to look like

(call me a traditionalist if you want)

aaah, all order has been restored. can you feel the harmony and peace? *contented sigh*

now if you'll excuse me i have a belated watermelon craving that needs some attention......

dresden plate

it's a stack and whack dresden plate! it's HAND pieced (people still do that :) ) by the patient charolette m.

she had started hand quilting it and i saw what designs she startedwith, and adapted the idea to my quilting....

i know she'll like it. i hope anyway :) it was suppose to have feathers in the background, but it just didn't look/feel right....so i used a leaf meander which fits the feel of the quilt
now i'm not much into flowers, cause i'm not (self proclaimed) girly. so flowers don't always pop into my head as a first go-to motif. the quilt usually has to scream "I WANT FLOWERS" to get flowers, but this one just seemed to need it. it was appropriate.

it'll be in the show next month (is it just me or this a running theme lately :) ) i'm quilting like a mad woman trying to keep up with deadlines...not complaining i swear....

oh- i have a really really distant sideline/tip: i have long hair and constantly wear it in a pony tail. well, i went to put it up the other day and my elastic holder snapped...so you know me, i hate to throw anything away, so i just tossed it on the counter and grabbed another one and went on with my day. (there's a tip i promise) so i was looking through my patterns for something and i noticed i had a tote pattern that had a button with an elastic loop for closing. it caught my attention cause the elastic was white and i thought that it would of been cool if they could of found elastic to match the tote (purple) then it hit me like a ton of bricks!!: use a pony tail holder instead of elastic! i know pure genius right? they come in tons of different colors and are relatively inexpensive and you can find them anywhere really (including my favorite place: the dollar store) thinking outside the box once again....and people want to pick my brain, it gets scary in there.....i should know....

*happy pants dance*

i just heard on the radio that "project runway" will start THIS thursday at 8:00 on the lifetime channel! yeah! i hated bravo's "fashion show" blah blah blah! you can't have competitive sewing without heidi clum's german accent....DUH!

i wonder if this has anything to do with nina garcia's leaving elle and moving to marie claire? and you know that heidi is pregnant again....oh, i already see tons of gossip!!!! and drama! i can't wait...is it thursday yet?

so expect to see post on fridays about the show! (along with 'frame fridays')

if you haven't yet- hop on over to here for a chance to win the red dog food tote....the drawing is next week!....also read some of the comments. there are some great (creative) names for quilt shops....

mistletoe in august???

actually mistletoe grows year round, you just can't see it for all the leaves on the tree...anyway..

i'm taking a break from my mad dash of quilting, and uploaded pictures of the quilt i finished this afternoon.

it is from blackbird design's book "when the cold wind blows" and was made by jan c. it will be in the quilt show next month.

i doodlebugged the background, and double CCed the green squares, and CCed the small red squares. speaking of the red squares- every one was a separate stop and start....also, the inside of the holly leaves is a stop and start...i know, tell me about it....i'm just crazy i guess....this is a new record for me. it took 16 hours to quilt and 19 bobbins.

and also, i've decided that i'm 'retiring' my doodlebug filler. i will reserve it for show quilts and my quilts. it just takes way! too long. on the mistletoe quilt it took close to 10 hours to just quilt the background.
now i have to come up with a new background filler....*sarcasm* darn :)

nemo got tattoos...

Laura over at the AQPS forum got creative (click here) and gave her green millie 'tats'. i have blatantly copied her...sincerest form of flattery right?

having ink myself i thought that nemo needed some of his own....here's the problem- he has a dude's name- so i can't be sticking butterflies and flowers on him....so i was out and about looking for something totally unrelated and something 'psst'ed me....now nemo has tattoos too! ....maybe i need to get more ink so we match. wait- that might be a bit over board....you can love your machine, just don't luv your machine... *wink* i'm going back later to get the other 2 sheets i left. this used two sheets, one per side. i need more to 'fill' it in...

nemo is pimping now. i going to take the pink ones off....

by golly....frame friday #1

so, i read alot of blogs and everyone has these cute little things that they do on certain days that start with the same letter that the day does: WIP wednesday, sunday stash, fabric friday, etc. so by golly, i'm starting my very own do-something-on-a-specific-day thing.

so welcome to the inaugural "frame friday" post. every friday i will take a picture of whatever quilt i have in the frame and is currently being quilted....

so there...you're welcome to play along. :)

the bestest quilting buddy

i posted the bestest doorbell....so it's only fair. he's also a 'bestest doorbell' in training :)

my favorite 'melt your heart' moments are when i'm quilting along and he lays his head on the top of my foot and does that 'puppy sigh' of utter contentment....

houses

i just finished this quilt...it was made by linda m. from FL. isn't it cute! so sweet...

if you wanna make your own i just happen to know where to go for that. my keepsake catalog came yesterday and i'll be darned if they don't have this quilt as a BOM...i was flipping through and was like, whoa! i know that quilt.

Click here to go to keepsake quilting's online BOM program.

i need to dash to the post office, then i'll load the next quilt.....busy busy busy....show's in september.

thought i'd share

i got this as a email and i like it enuf to share....i'm reminded of the saying- can't see the forest for the trees.

SALT & MENSA
Mensa is an organization whose members have an IQ of 140 or higher. A few years ago, there was a Mensa convention in San Francisco, and several members lunched at a local cafe. While dining, they discovered that their saltshaker contained pepper and their pepper shaker was full of salt. How could they swap the contents of the bottles without spilling, and using only the implements at hand? Clearly this was a job for Mensa!

The group debated and presented ideas, and finally came up with a brilliant solution involving a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer. They called the waitress over to dazzle her with their solution.

"Ma'am," they said, "we couldn't help but notice that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt shaker..."

"Oh," the waitress interrupted. "Sorry about that." She unscrewed the caps of both bottles and switched them.

(moral: you can be a genius and still not have a lick of common sense)

i got the show results!

i received my envelope for the ECQG show in sept. i submitted 5 quilts, and all but one made it. so you'll be seeing my shop hop quilt, spice, and Jeanne's Black Batik quilt and flower BOMs. so that's cool....now i have to get labels and sleeves on everybody....

oh and finish the tops i have here for other people.....

back to work shannon *whip snap* my boss is such a slave driver :)

oh- don't forget to visit here and leave a comment for a chance to win a red dog food tote!

sawtooth cutting dimensions

i promised....so here it is: click on the picture for a larger view

the C squares at the bottom of the heart and the D squares have the diagonal marked on the wrong side of the fabric. they will be sewn to the E rectangles using the flip and sew (sew on the line and flip it over, trimming the excess underneath- i think that's the easiest way) FYI- double check that all the flip and sew squares are going the right directions before sewing, that's why i posted a drawing of the block, for layout purposes....

the flying geese are sewn using the no waste method...there are tons of directions already out there....i'll go find a link. CLICK HERE  you'll cut (6) of C, only (4) is used in for the flying geese, and the other (2) are for the flip and sew at the bottom of the heart.
i mark my sewing lines as well as my cutting lines- i find that i get perfect points in my block by marking all 3 lines.

geez, i hope this is as clear as mud....

i love EQ

here's a sweet little sawtooth star block with a heart in the center. i don't have the time right now (i know, i shouldn't of posted it then, but what guarantees do i have that you'd come back :) ) but i'll post later with the cutting dimensions. i could see this done in SOoo many color ways....

but i was thinking this weekend...since i like designing blocks, i was wondering if it would be cool to do an online blogged BOM....i'll design the blocks and layout and once a month (on a regular day) i'll post the block and directions...i dunno- it sounded cool....i was thinking 10" blocks, as a challenge to me...whatcha think?

finishing binding with a seam- tutorial

a third tutorial- i'm moving up in the blogging world :)

the other day i was sewing binding on a quilt and realized that a tutorial on how to finish it with a seam.

what the....!??

so i go to wally world the other day cause i had the worst watermelon craving ever! so i get there and spent a couple minutes picking the perfect watermelon. couldn't wait to get home and slice it and get my watermelon on like donkey kong....so i go and slice it in half and...

what the hell !!!!

you know how in the cartoon when wile e. coyote realizes he's run off the edge of the cliff and does the quick double take, then falls- i know that feeling...

yes, you are looking at a yellow watermelon.

it smells like watermelon, kindda tastes like watermelon (has a yellow squash flavor to it)- which leads me to my theory-

ok bare with me... so this farmer plants all these watermelon plants in a field, but still has some room for something else, so his neighbor says, "hey i bought too many yellow squash plants- you want some?" "sure! the wife loves yellow squash," says mr. watermelon farmer, flash forward couple months and he proudly carries the first watermelon of the season in to his wife . the product of all their hard work and labor. the very thing that will put money in the bank. she slowly slices it open and then you could of heard a mouse pee on a cotton ball- yup, it's yellow. i imagine them standing there staring at the oddity. him in demin overalls, her in a flowered house dress and white apron, arm holding the knife in midair. i imagine she's the first to break the silence, "homer, whatdidyado?" looks like the squash pollen jumped row to the watermelon party. oops, what do we do now?

hey i know- sell the whole effing crop to walmart- they'll buy anyting.

yellow watermelon- looks like someone peed in it....what's next- blood red cucumbers?

peek a boo!

here i am, now you go hide and i'll come find you! i've been a quilt cave recluse.

wow! it was monday when i last posted....here's what i was working on. two blooming 9patches....made by carolyn g. and her mother. her mother (sorry i don't know her name) Mom made the smaller one (with the pink) and carolyn made the larger one (with the yellow). i quilted what i call baby bonnets on Mom's and caroyln's got a feather meander (even though you can't see it) here's the weird thing- i was allergic to carolyn's quilt, took me two days to realize it also....thank goodness i'm not allergic to all fabric and quilts....i would not be a happy camper.

i made a blooming9 along time ago...it's made entirely of batiks. and i'll be honest with ya- i have absolutely NO desire to ever ever make another one....my nine patches were 3 1/4" unfinished, yup- i agree- i found the wrong pattern....

yup....

i know exactly how that feels...
*monday blahs...*

the bestest door bell

why you ask? i can hear him over the LA...

plus he does this *gruff, gruff* bark to let me know that there is someone in the drive way. so i know you're here before you step foot on the porch...
