weekend roundup

emily's ny beauty went home this weekend...
it was a fun quilt to quilt and very bright!

the colors are right up my alley!

the weather was too beautiful to just  sit inside and let it go to waste. after being cooped up for weeks with the cold temps, ice, and snow- this was a welcome break. it was almost 70degrees yesterday and 65degrees today!

i took barney to the dog run and will be giving him a bath shortly. he stinks!

i flung some arrows...sweet. i'm feeling more comfortable and getting good at hitting the dot i'm aiming at!

davis and i will join some 3D archery tournaments this spring (it's redneck golf :) ) should be fun! i'm excited! it will give me lots of quality practice. hopefully i'll get good at guessing yardage. now, to just get over the go-up-a-tree-to-hunt thing so i can archery hunt this season!

wrinkles

wrinkles are only cute on shar pei puppies

(say it with me- "awww!")

where are wrinkles not cute? in the backing fabrics for quilts.

i hate ironing backings.  murphy's law -my iron will decide to spit out the most nastiest of stains only when i iron a customer's backing.

i have a trick to eliminate having to warm up the spitting beast.

i keep a spritz bottle with water in it by my machine. when i get a shar pei backing, i give it a nice mist of water and roll it onto my frame as usual. the water along with my smoothing it as i roll will remove most wrinkles.

however- this method will not remove stubborn deep creases or the bolt fold...

pattern info

last week or so, i posted a picture of the wall hangings i quilted for Jane that looked like elf legs...some seemed to be interested in acquiring the pattern.

i did some digging and found that the pattern is called "Which Witch" from Crazy Old Ladies and can be purchased by calling Tiny Stitches: 770-565-1113

do i type older?

well, i am offically 34 now. i haven't forgotten to post all the S blocks from my birthday. i have a couple of straglers and i want to include them in the post, so you'll have to wait couple more days. i have been playing with them on my design wall and have found the perfect border and backing- i'm excited about sharing that!! i know you guys want to see them all....

i've been quilting.
laura's fushcia fassett bowties! L.U.V. this one! course i'm a sucker for anything fassett!

the celebration parade!

as y'all know sunday is my coming-into-this-world anniversary and i have L.O.V.E.D. the parade of 'S' blocks that have appeared in my mailbox. everyone has made me smile. i will give them their very own post soon!  i've been playing with them on the design wall....

today i got a box!!! my friend jess made me a pillow!!!

i love the little snail....thank you jess!

i can't wait to take a nap and drool on it :)

joann sent me a pattern to enable my stash bash....it will have to wait, i have other future flimsies in line ahead of it.

thank you joann!

pin bling

this is my pincushion. its magnetic and well, a little boring. don't get me wrong, i love my pincushion. it is after all a much needed notion if you sew! but after all these years i wanna look at something different, something with a little more 'bling'

let's make a pretty magnetic saucer pincushion!!

aahhhh.....

let's collect what we need.

first you'll need to track down 'power magnets' i found mine at Hobby Lobby. three pack for $3...make sure they are power magnets. they will look like watch batteries. you'll need two for this project.

next, a trip to the local thrift store to find some nice teacup saucers that have long ago lost their mate. they were very budget friendly- less than $1 each. look for a distinct circle in the middle with slightly raised edges. flip the saucer over and double check that the bottom has a indent deep enuf to 'hide' the magnets.

i like to pretend that the saucers are so sad sitting there on the shelf knowing that without the teacup thay are undesired. then i come along and buy them and give them a second life....i need to get out more :)

anywhoo....you'll need some super glue too. i like the squeeze control gel. (if you get super glue on your fingers- acetone fingernail polish remover will get it off)

okay so let's make a pretty pincushion...

i took some sand paper and roughed up the glaze on the bottom of the saucers. i just wanted to make sure the glue had a good surface it could bond to. wipe it and the magnets with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils and residue to help the glue have a good bonding surface. honestly- this was probably over kill because the magnets will hold themselves pretty good just from the attraction of the pins...

now a short science class. magnets have poles and will either repeal or attract depending on which end of the pole is close to another magnet. this is important because we don't want the repeal in our magnet once glued to the saucer.

glue one magnet to the bottom of the saucer close to the edge of the indent for the teacup. wait a couple seconds for the glue to set..........then flip the saucer over and 'stick' some pins the saucer. now place the other magnet on the bottom of the saucer. the pins will help hold it. if it keeps sliding away from the first magnet, flip it over. (this is the poles attracting or repealing) remove the magnet, making sure that you place the glue on the side the was against the saucer. i placed my magnets about one onch apart....place the magnets as far apart as your indent will allow.

let the glue set- an wha-la! a pretty magnetic pincushion that is inexpensive enough to make for all your quilting friends!

Em over at Em Celebrates is running a blog theme that celebrates the sewing notions behind the scenes. this qualifies as celebrating the humble pincushion!

it's the little things....

davis is a great resource for unconventional needed crafty supplies and over the years has learned to stop asking what i am going to use my special requests for.

recently i needed a big chunk of good, sturdy, clean cardboard.  not to be out done, he brings me a box that a light fixture was packed in. this box was 2foot by 4 foot. PERFECT...

i grabbed my utlity knife and started cutting....

this is just what i wanted!!! some masking tape and i have a fence for my sewing machine!

i got tired of her jumping off the table and trying to run away...

just kidding!

my sewing machine cover needed some support. the cover was a bit flimsy and it needed some reinforment....ahh, order has been restored in the studio :) it's the little things.

getting my groove back

after the holidays i'm having a hard time getting back into my 'normal' quilting routine...

i have been quilting and since this is suppose to be a quiting blog....

first up- jane's mistletoe quilt...

* you can click on a pic for a larger view, then click the 'back' button on your browser to come back to the blog *

and her three elf legs wall hangers

and her harvest quilt from the cutest panel

those prairie points are 3D

then i quilted my tenn tshirt quilt

i used my 'maze' design. i haven't quilted it in a while, so i dusted it off.

i used a wally world sheet for the backing. i wanted to see how it quilted...just fine and a backing for $8! that fits my budget. i wouldn't put a sheet on the back of a show quilt, but for utilitarian quilts, this works just fine.

i quilted erica's airplane quilt that is a gift for her grandson. i like the stars in the red squares.

then this asian fabrics quilt

i finished it just before christmas

see, i've been busy...

may i ask another favor...?

i know i ask a lot of favors, but i do keep up and read all my followers' blogs, but alas, some are more difficult than others...

i read all my blogs in google reader and if you have your blog's site feed set to 'short' i only see a couple of sentences...

would you please go and double check that your blog's feed is set to full...
1. go to the dashboard page
2. click on Settings tab
3. click 'Site Feed'
4. in the drop down manu beside 'Allow Blog Feeds' chose 'full'

my poor little computer is getting slow and going to each blog individually crashes it's little digital brain, plus-i want to read your blog as you've typed it with all your pictures...thanks!

it's still here.....

the snow is still here joined by its bothersome accomplice, ice. an unforeseen problem had arisen from the weather. see, the other day we had sleet/freezing rain, so the top of the snow has a nice thick icy crust. so when you step, the ice shatters like glass.... davis comes frantically through the door carrying barney. *oh my gosh* apparently the broken ice crust is sharp enough to cut puppy paws. we cleaned them up and have administered proper medical care. no vet visit seems necessary ....lucky got a paw check and he has a small cut also...it's official, i'm hating the snow- it hurt my dogs!

in other news-
i spent the afternoon cutting seams from all the jeans i've accumulated to make a 'gee's bend' inspired quilt. stay tuned....that is my next 'to-do' quilt.

i'm looking forward to playing with liberated and improvisional piecing using old jeans...i'm eyeing the 'housetop' design.

pretty pretty

remember this quilt? Cindy of Hyacinth Quilt Designs finished her quilt. remember i used her block directions inspired from the pillow featured on the cover of martha stewart living...

i love how it works: you see something that someone does and it inspires you to create something also. it's a creative circle...
