super sucky bad news

when the phone rings really late at night, it's never good news...

i got the phone call from my dad that i've been dreading. Granny left this world this morning (sunday) at around 12:30am. thankfully she went quickly and painlessly. to have been raised by her since i can remember, this is me losing my mother, grandmother, and best friend all at once....

granny was such a character. you would of loved her! she was a practical person. her quick wit would always leave people speechless, but laughing. i am honored that she taught me everything she knew. i am especially grateful for the quilting lessons :)  i was raised right....and i have perfect table manners cause "what if you get invited to the white house to have supper with the president" :)  her sense of humor was a touch on the sarcastic side, but once you got use to it, it was okay. heaven opened the gates for a gem today....she'll have God laughing so hard....

if you would- send a good thought/prayer me and my dad's way...it's gonna get worse before it gets better, ya know....

*damn it*

i have the bestest santa!

davis is a good quilty santa...i recieved these two bali pops...i immedately knew what quilt they would be used in...which is....

(i'll share what else i got (it is TOO cute) in a later post)

the quilt from the cover of this book.....

(i bought this book from connecting threads (they always have really good deal on books, i never pay full retail))

so this is what i have sewn so far with the bali pops today...i have everything cut and will steal a couple minutes every once in a while to make one....

so this will be my new couch quilt....the one i have now has cotton batting, and i want one with a poly batting....for some weird reason, i have trouble getting/staying warm this winter *shrug*

(a special thank you to an elf at tiny stitches! M- thank you for helping, everything was perfect!)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

so, with T-minus-30 minutes of Christmas left, i thought i'd share something....it made me feel very childish (but in a good way)

the back story:
as you may know, davis is an electrician and his job allows him to 'explore' the back roads of the greater altanta area. so coming home tonight we took the 'long' way to the interstate from his mom's house (BTW, she absolutely LOVED her new couch pillows) i made the comment that i was glad we went that way cause we got to see all the Christmas lights on the houses...well, davis asked if we could make a slight diversion on the way home....*shrug* okay...seems a local small college, Life College, puts out these huge light sculptures....for the previous six years....how do i miss these things? they occupy the entire campus...even the little dorm area...some were animated. it was as close to a Christmas wonderland without the snow.  davis discovered this a couple weeks ago when using his GPS to go around traffic...he could see the figures, but being during the day, he couldn't see the lights...so this is one of my 'Christmas presents' from davis....enjoy the pictures...

check it out!

i'm almost at 5 digits! SWEET!

thank you to all my readers...i'm glad you like it and keep coming back for more!

pillowcase tutorial

cause i love y'all! and i want to give you, my blog readers, a christmas present, i'm going to share how i make pillowcases...i use to do the whole french seam thing, but i didn't like the way the seam looked at the edge of the cuff. then i tried the 'sausage roll' technique and ended up with the same dilemma...*sigh* i grabbed one of my 'commercially' made ones and studied how it was constructed, i liked the way the cuff was 'smooth' with no raw edges showing...this is what i came up with.....

these directions will make a standard sized pillowcase.
please read through all directions before beginning. clicking on a picture will make it bigger so you can see details. click the back button on your browser to come back to the tutorial.

1. you will need three fabrics: the body of the pillowcase (the floral), a accent (the stripe), and a cuff (the dots).  cut the following: body: 23" x 42"    cuff: 13" x 42"    accent 2" x 42"  if you have a direction print, double check when you cut it so you don't have upside down motifs....ask me how i know that....if you have never made a pillowcase- i suggest your first one be made with non-directinal prints...it'll take one PITA detail out of the equation...

2. fold the cuff and accent fabrics wrong sides together and press. this will make things easier on down the road...

3. sew the short ends of the accent and cuff pieces with a 1/4" SA. Press the SA open and repress the fold.

4. using a coordinating (or contrasting) thread, sew 1/8" from the fold on the cuff.

5. fold body fabric in half right sides together, and press. using a 3/8" SA, sew one short end and continue up the long end. back tack at the beginning and end of this seam, as well as the corner for reinforcement.

6. pin accent fabric to the right side of the body fabric, matching the seam from the accent to the seam of the body.  to prevent bulk, off-set the seams 1/2" or so.

7. match the seam of the cuff to the body fold, and without removing the pins holding the accent fabric, pin the cuff to the pillowcase body. i just put the pins between the ones that are already there. remember, there is no such thing as too many pins...

8. this is what it will all look like. notice you can't see the accent stripe.

9. using a 1/4" SA and sewing through all layers, stitch around the entire pillowcase. i don't have a serger, so i have to go back and zigzag the edge to prevent unraveling.

10. i just pinking shear the SA of the body. i reckoned that since there's going to be a pillow in there and it won't be highly visible, this is an okay treatment for unraveling....i have zigzagged the raw edge of the body  and all it did was make it stiff. if i had only had a serger.... :)  santa???? my birthday's soon too....*hint hint*

11. turn the whole pillowcase right side out. i press the accent (now a flange) towards the cuff.  stand back and admire your lovely new pillowcase. good job!

12. notice how the edge of the cuff is 'smooth'....no bumpy seam allowance....me gusta!

now- there's all sorts of 'embellishment' ideas to do...some examples:
-i think it would be cool for children to have all sorts of different pillowcases...it could be used to help them 'stay' in their beds at night....
-make ones to match the seasons, or a specific quilt. an added bonus to making ones that match a quilt: if (forbid) something happened to a quilt and it needed to be mended, you can sacrifice the pillowcase to replace/mend the quilt. also, if a quilt is stored in it's matching pillowcase- you can look at the folded stack and know immediately which quilt is which...
-if you have a fancy sewing machine that has all the decorative stitches, use a solid fabric for the accent and with a contrasting thread, stitch a decorative design along the folded edge....
-use prairie points instead of the accent strip.
-embroider/monogram initials/names on the cuff....
the possibilities are endless....this tutorial is just a blank canvas waiting for your imagination and creativity!

happy stitching!

kindda last minute

i just finished these pillows for davis's mom for christmas....i know she'll like them.

i really enjoy making gifts for people.  i like pawing through my stash to find the 'perfect' fabric that i think the recipient will really like...i like the fact that i'm making something that is so much more special than a gift that is 'store' bought.  i find that people tend to cherish 'heart made' (instead of home made) gifts. anyone can go out and buy a pillow, but there are only two of these in the entire world, and i made them...

changes...

did you notice?

do you like my new header photo? it was time for a change...the old one was getting a bit stale...gotta keep things 'fresh' *giggle*

*fingers crossed*

with all the snowfall nation wide- i'm hoping for some snow....i know i'm crazy....being from the mountains of east tennessee, i miss the snow... here in ga, we get rain, and rain is ugly.... eveything gets muddy and dirty...*sigh* i looked at the weather....*grr* it's not going to get cold enough...*shrug* oh well...i'll go make a mudman....

but a girl can hope....*fingers crossed*

pieceful design wall

i've been taking the time to do some piecing....

first here are my EPP (english paper piecing) blocks so far....(in my best Count voice from sesame street: "five english paper pieced stars, ah ah ah) i have a bunch basted, now for the sewing...had to take a break from them tonight...must be going to rain soon....

then this WIP. it's a pattern called Cake Mix from cozy quilt designs. it uses one layer cake and one jelly roll. i used Mill House Inn by fig tree from moda. i learned something...this is the first time i have sewn with moda precuts, and honestly, i was surprised....the layer cake squares were various sizes; from 10" square to almost 11" sq. you should of seen me...i was re-measuring and double checking my cuts cause nothing was lining up....then i was looking at that pinked edge and wondered where do i line the edge of my foot to...*shrug* it really wasn't that hard... i saw this as a sample at one of the LQS and i immediately knew what i would quilt on it if it was brought to me....can you guess???  ok, i'll give you a hint: it rhymes with 'normal weathers'   *lol*

i have another project i've been working on, but i can't show you yet...it has mitered borders and i did those today- they came out flat! and square! *flat miter dance* i can't show you....yet....but i'm going to be in a book....i'll spill the dirt when i can....pinkie swear!

new pillow

yesterday was the Stitchn' Sallies Christmas get-together and we exchanged fat quarters (some were more exchanged than others...we did the open and steal game..i have no idea what it's called) and i liked mine alot!
so i made me a pillow with this month's BOM block following my flange pillow tutorial. isn't it cool how the same block can look so different by only changing the fabrics....the fat quarter pack i received had a nice a stripe in it, so i cut it on the bias and used it to bind the edges of the pillow...i like the red poppy looking flowers in the flange...i already test drove it- it's nice and comfy....in case you were wondering

que pasa?

well, i hinted around at a dresden plate quilt with feathers....ta dah! i quilted it for my friend sue...the dreden plates are hand appliqued...

*drool* (is it PC to drool over your own quilting?) i was unloading it from the machine and the lighting was perfect....

follower giveaway received

remember the follower giveaway? well, vivian won and i received an email today that she received her prize and i promised to post pictures of what it was....

i made her one of my quilted composition book covers....i quilted a navy batik fabric with  feathers using a beautiful variegated thread...

the inside snugly holds a composition notebook. i found some at the local office supply store that are gridded. perfect for quilters...i might do a tutioral one day...but don't hold your breath!

ETA: vivian blogged about it here...

*wave*

i know i haven't posted much in the quilty goodness category, but i'm actually still quilting customer quilts. i'm working on one now that will get delivered next week and i can't wait to show you the pictures pictures....it's a dresden plate quilt and i feathered the background.....*drool*

but in the meanwhile, this is what i did earlier in the week. i did some simple quilting on anne's three quilts. i only have pics of two though...oops, i'm slacking on my blog responsibilites  :>)

here is her LQS's BOM. if you remember this is the quilt i did for davis's mom last year for christmas...i just did a simple sashing...this is their sashing setting... i like the cheddar star points... i quilted it with my cotton candy E2E...

and then there is this little noah's ark wallhanging...it's from the art of Jerri Sanders. the fabric line is really old (like 3-4 yrs) so i'm sorry i'm posting something you can't get anymore...it is/was a cute panel...i used a dark grey thread and meandered it....

monday i will be posting the second block for my online BOM, so come back for that...also, don't forget the caption giveaway...i put a quick link in the left side menu...click barney's picture!

my first block done!

so i'm not a watch TV type of girl....my hands get bored....so i tend to have an needleturn applique project within reach of my end of the couch...but lately, i've gotten 'burned out' with needle turn...so i've been waiting for inspiration on my next hand project...

well, i found it....i was reading Material Obsession's blog and saw this post and feel in love with those english paper pieced stars (about mid way down the post). so i got out my card stock and started cutting out 3 inch 45 degree diamonds and 3 inch squares...that's when it hit me that this was a little more 'involved' then i wanted....so i googled english paper piecing pieces and found Paper Pieces they have them already cut out at a very reasonable price....so i ordered some (300 of each- that'll give me 18 blocks, plus the two i cut out) they measure almost 15" across so 20 blocks should make a good sized quilt....

so drum roll please....my first block!

i was also inspired by the wedgie circles....so i ordered the ruler...i'm thinking batiks for that one....i'm happy to be inpsired again....was getting a little worried.....
