i was thinking

it didn't hurt though...

so it's that time of year for me to start thinking about next year's BOM here on the blog....i want to do something different rather than one 12inch block a month with a traditional 3x4 layout at the end...

i'm open to suggestions...we could do bigger blocks for a larger quilt (but that would take more fabric) or we could do two or three smaller blocks a month (use some stash and be fat quarter friendly)....whatcha think?

  1. Three blocks a month seems unsurmountable. Exciting, but stressful at the same time. I feel like I have to hurry up and get them done, even when life is getting in the way. I love stash quilts! I have seen mystery BOMs too which seemed fun. Ones where you get the pieces you need to make.. like 37 of this flower, and later we will reveal where you need to place them.

  2. I'm tired of the same old 12 blocks too. A mystery quilt would be fun, like Mommarock suggested. Like: make 10 of these, 12 of these, and 13 of these and this is how we place them together. That way, we can chain piece and will help with cutting. Or do a round robin type of quilt, where we add a new border every month. Or you could shake up the old 3X4 and make it a theme: trees, houses, etc. Or what could be fun is different sized blocks.

Whatever your idea is, I'm looking forward to it. THanks for all the work you put into your BOMs :)

  3. I'm not into blocks set with sashing. I like the idea of the round robin with different borders. I have seen a couple done off set even with wonky borders. Also like the idea of the different sized blocks.

  4. All of the suggestions sound like fun! I kinda lean toward the idea of a mystery BOM. I've never done one, but maybe I'll give it a try if you go that way :)

  5. Lots of fun suggestions. Mysteries always make me nervous but I do like the idea of more, smaller blocks. This year's has been awesome. I so appreciate your willingness to design another quilt for us!

  6. A mystery quilt sounds like a lot of fun. But it would be nice to see different sized blocks that magically fit together. I also like it when some of the blocks end up being in the border.

  7. I don't care much for mysteries...I admit it, I'm too much of a control freak. I like Kathy's idea though...I find myself drawn to quilts with different sized blocks used together.

  11. Something done in larger sections, say 16 or 18 or maybe even 20 inches square, but each section with a variety of different shapes and sizes of blocks and fillers. But because each section is the same size, putting it together would be fairly easy.

  12. I like the idea of having a little (or a lot) of different size blocks. But I really really want is a unique setting--I'm tired of the 3x4 settings. I'm sure I would really enjoy what you would come up with as a different setting!! Thanks for all you do--it is really appreciated.

  13. Being a bit selfish here - I have an overabundance of fat quarters that should get into quilts. That being said, I've been very happy with your 12" blocks, too. So, just do your thing!

  14. I have seen a lot of layouts lately that combine 12",6",9",9x18" with a few 3" thrown in to even things up. I put together a top for a gift out of blocks made by a bunch of people and we used a layout like that. It really gives variety to the look and allowed for some appliqué as well. Just a thought.

Btw, I loved a lot of your quilting in the show and had high hopes that some of my tickets would win me your basket! Alas, it was not to be so!
