Paw Prints On My Heart

Almost 15 years ago, after my move to Atlanta, i realized i was lonely. After some deep thought i decided a dog was exactly what i wanted/needed. off to the Atlanta Animal Shelter i went. it was overwhelming!! hundreds of dogs and the noise, so i just started walking up and down all the aisles. The dog in run 156 caught my eye. Just sitting there quietly taking it all in. His paperwork said that he had been found tied to a dumpster in Douglasville. his eyes had a depth that only an old, wise understanding soul could have. that was my pick- i wanted him. After all the paperwork was completed, the gentlemen happened to notice something. "he's been here 2 months, if he wasn't rescued today he'd been euthanized tomorrow" lucky dog.....and the name stuck.

and so a friendship began- i'd never had a dog before and he patiently suffered thru the learning curve and all my mistakes. We both had lots of lessons to learn from each other.

Lucky Dog April 1999- December 2013

All good stories have an end, and yesterday we said goodbye to Lucky. I will always remember how he'd tuck his butt and spin when we played and his deep hatred of yellow jackets and wasps. He'd kill them and eat them like it was his personal mission. But most off all, i will remember that HE rescued ME.

Bye Bubba Dog, you were the best! Love you, and most of all, thank you!

  3. Oh I feel sad when I read your post, but - it is a good story. It is the worst thing about having dogs - they live to short a life, and we miss them when they Arent here anymore. But - I know what the best cure is: A new Little puppy, that can win your Heart and soul!

  5. He lived a long life if you had him for 15 years. It sounds like you made the best decision when you decided to adopt him. It's always hard to say good-bye to our furry friends :( Hope you'll be able to cherish his memory forever. Truly sorry for your loss, Shannon!

  18. I'm so sorry, Shannon. I know how much you love Lucky. When you feel you can go to the shelter and rescue another kind soul. He will not replace Lucky - you never replace a loved one you have lost - but you honor Lucky by giving another pet the long, happy life that he had. And the antics of a puppy remind you of the good times and not the loss.

  19. Your post made me cry Shannon! It's been only a month since I went through the same thing. Our dog, Tucker, of 14 years. He was also a rescue (he was a month old, the rest of his litter died, mom abandoned him, and neighbor was trying to raise him on cream-of-wheat because that's what he had from the food bank). He was an odd dog, and I really didn't even bond with him until he was maybe a year old. But, after that, he was like one of my children and I miss him every day. I try not to think of him, because when I do - the tears flow :( ::HUGS:: to you!

  20. Oh I am so sorry. I know the tears will be many for awhile and things you did out of habit with your dog, you will find yourself still doing those also for awhile, such as starting to go through a doorway the dog used to follow you through and you will still pause waiting for him. OR looking at the clock thinking it's time to feed him.

I know this because we just lost our Ragdoll cat my husband and I purchased on our 1st anniversary and drove two states away to pick him up just two weeks ago. It's been strange not having him around and I still am doing things out of habit, not realizing how 'normal' those things had become. Each night he would sleep on my pillow and 'knead' next to my head on the pillow or my shoulder (yea it hurt lol) but hubby would take him to the bedroom and then I'd follow myself in a few minutes. When I opened the door, many times he was sitting there waiting too escape for a run through the house before coming back again so I'd open the door slowly putting my foot out in front of me to stop him from darting out. Yep. I am still finding myself doing this even now, two weeks later. I still cry when I read or see something that reminds me and writing this just brought those tears out again.

Big hugs to you. I know how hard it is to lose a pet who is really part of our family.

  21. So, so sorry for your loss, Shannon. I know there's a big Lucky sized hole in your heart and your home and I know exactly how hard that emptiness is.

  22. I am so sorry for your loss and I know the pain only too well. I have rescued three senior Beagles or Beagle/Basset mixes since 2000 and being seniors, did not have them as long as I wished. With each loss, I thought my heart would break from the pain of it. These words sent by my vet after the first loss, have gotten me through a lot of the pain. I hope they help you too:
    Fragile Circle
We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own,
live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality,
never fully understanding the necessary plan.

  25. So sorry Shannon. We said goodbye to our Basset Ben this year in February and I still have tears in my eyes. We only have them for a short time but they make such an impact. I hope you find comfort in your happy memories and the good life you gave him.

  31. Oh so sorry to hear about Lucky. I just posted about the lost of my dog, KitKat, when I saw on my sidebar about Lucky. I know exactly what you mean about those thoughtful eyes - ones that know all about God and the world. That wasn't may KitKat, but another dog I have. It's such a hard adjustment. So how are you doing now?
