now what...?

i am very proud of myself! i have fiished a couple of UFOs and will reward myself by starting something new!
so i want to ask your opinion:

i have these fat quarters and the 'black' batik that have been sitting on a shelf and i have decided that it's their turn to be a quilt.
so do i make a quilt like this using the humble HST (image source here)
Or do i go a little more 'fancy' and make a jacob's ladder a la bonnie hunter, but use the black where the yellow is? (image source here)

either way, what i like is that with the hand dye 'solid' look of the fabrics, that the quilt will have an Amish feel to it- a contemporary Amish quilt.

so which would you vote for?

  1. You asked... My vote is for the Jacob's ladder. It's just a lighter design (for lack of a better word) The HST quilt is nice, but the bigger black pieces would make it heavier. I'm sure you will make either one just bee-you-tee-full. And congrats on finishing some UFO's.

  2. I vote for the HSTs! I love the concept of the colors up against the black. But like Leslie said, the Jacob's Ladder would also be nice. Now that didn't help at all, did it?

  4. If I had to choose between the two. . for YOU . . I would choose the basic HSTs, I think you could have fun arranging them with the bold colors. . and of course the quilting I think would show up better on those.
BUT, whey don't you take those dyed solids and make an ACTUAL Amish pattern? ya know. . LARGE squares. . and then just quilt it to death/

  5. I vote for the HSTs. I do like the Jacob's ladder, but I just love the more modern look of the HSTs especially with the batiks. There a gazillion things you can do with those HSTs. Can't wait to see what you come up with

  10. I honestly can't pick one over the other - can you get more fabric and make both? That's my favorite solution when I have trouble making these hard decisions.

  12. I just finished piecing a Jacob's Ladder, and I love interplay of the squares and HSTs. It's one of my favorite blocks, so give it a try. Kathie L in Allentown

  14. I also vote for HST. (In Canada HST stands for harmonized sales tax and is 13% on everything - goods and services!)
